🕵️ THE COMPRESSOR FILES- CASE # 0002
“The Mystery of the Oil Covered Compressor.”

🎞️ Initial Report:
Reported condition:
"Customer thinks they might have a slight oil leak."
The customer reported that the compressor had been leaking oil and that they had continued adding oil in an effort to prevent the machine from overheating.
Eventually, after adding approximately 20 gallons of oil, they called for emergency service.
The compressor was still running.
What the technicians found when they arrived was something considerably more serious than a typical oil leak.
🔍 THE SCENE:
The compressor area was covered in approximately one inch of standing oil.
Every inch of the machine was coated.
Oil was dripping from components throughout the compressor, and atomized oil had become suspended in the surrounding air.
There was so much oil on the floor that simply walking into the area was unsafe.
So the investigation couldn't begin immediately.
The crime scene had to be made safe first.
The technicians created a path through the oil, scooping standing oil into a dustpan and transferring it into an oil collection pan.
Oil-absorbent mats were then placed around the compressor and throughout the surrounding area until more than 400 square feet of flooring was covered.
Only after the floor was safe enough to walk on could the real investigation begin.
🚩 THE CULPRIT
There wasn't one leak.
There were six.
The technicians identified:
Two leaks on the main injection line
One leak at the main face plate connecting to the air end
Leaks within the cooler
One leak on the return line to the separator
The separator return-line leak was significant because it contributed to the atomized oil vapors found throughout the area.
But there was another clue.
🧩 THE EVIDENCE:
The volume of oil was concentrated at the face plate.
The face plate uses an anaerobic gasket/sealant, which remains liquid rather than curing into a traditional solid gasket. That seal is designed to maintain its integrity under pressure.
In this case, the face-plate leak was substantial enough that an on-site repair wasn't practical.
The mystery was solved.
But the repair was going to be considerably bigger than the initial complaint suggested.
🔧 CORRECTIVE ACTION & RESOLUTION:
The air end could not reasonably be refurbished on-site, so it was removed and sent out for refurbishment.
While the air end was away, technicians continued working on the rest of the compressor.
The remaining leaks were repaired, and the compressor underwent extensive cleaning to remove the accumulated oil from the equipment and surrounding area.
Once the refurbished air end returned, it was reinstalled.
The compressor was then reassembled, tested, and inspected for proper operation and remaining leaks.
🛢️ THE COST OF THE EVIDENCE:
The compressor used food-grade oil.
Approximately 20 gallons had been added before the emergency service call.
📍 THE PREVENTATIVE MEASURES:
An oil leak should never be treated as something that can simply be managed indefinitely by adding more oil.
Loss of lubrication can contribute to overheating and equipment damage, but continually replenishing the oil without identifying why the oil is disappearing can allow the underlying failure to progress.
When oil loss is significant or unexplained:
Stop. Investigate. Find the leak.
The sooner the source is identified, the better the opportunity to prevent a small leak from becoming a much larger repair—and a much larger cleanup.
✅ CASE STATUS:
RESOLVED
The air end was refurbished and reinstalled, the remaining leaks were repaired, and the compressor was thoroughly cleaned.
The machine was returned to service following testing and inspection.
The compressor survived.
The floor eventually recovered.
The shop towels and absorbent mats were not so lucky.
